joe is one of us - for all of us
“My parents met in New London and started a family far from their hometown, because my father enlisted the US Army. My older brother was born in El Paso, followed by me in Germany and my little sister in New London. Although my parents divorced when I was in second grade, family get togethers and holidays remained the same. Early on, I understood that although circumstances may change, I would always be able to rely on my family for support. I am a very proud graduate of the New London Public School system and immediately joined the work force in 1989 earning a Journeyman’s license in in 1992 from the State of Connecticut. To make ends meet I picked up a second job in 1989 working for Recovery Room restaurant in New London. I held both jobs until I left construction in 1995 to run Pizza Works in Old Saybrook making that my full time job. I went back to construction leaving a job I loved, because my wife was laid off and our family was going to lose her employers health insurance. In 1997 I joined the Sheet Metal Worker’s Union Local 40 and have worked on multiple projects large and small. In 2006 I was hired by Hillery Company through my Union and became certified to weld on projects for Electric Boat. Using skills I learned as a sheet metal worker and restaurant manager the owner promoted me from a lead installer to shop foreman, and became Vice President from 2016 to present.
Politically I served on Groton’s RTM and Town Council collectively for nine years before running for the 41st District State Representative in 2015. I served for three terms and reluctantly stepped back as the pressure of work and legislative duties became to much to handle. I understand the time needed to serve as a Senator will be greater than my duties as a State Representative and only considered this run, because I will be retired by 2027.
I was inspired to run for State Representative in 2015 because my son brought addiction to the forefront of our lives and I quickly realized our state was falling short of providing the services needed. My wife and I helped start Community Speaks Out to help folks in addiction find a path to recovery. I currently serve as the President and dedicate a large part of my free time to help families and folks suffering from this disease. On December 11, 2016 we lost our son, he was shot and killed while coming to the aide of a woman being beaten by her boyfriend. Although he was gone before I was sworn in, he was there to help me campaign and celebrate winning the election. My wife and I continue to honor our son by helping families and individuals navigate their way to recovery. Our daughter and son-in-law have blessed us with two beautiful grandchildren and believe its their future that inspired me to run for the 18th Senate District.” ~ Joe de la Cruz
